Take a look here. It worked for a few people, still didn't manage to get it working with my EEEPC 701.

Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately after adding new fdi file scrolling still does not work.
should I go back to the old and trusty synaptics?
Or there is still a chance that "new and improved" stuff will work?

did you restart hal after adding those options?

yes, I did restart hall/X
this did not solve my problem but I run today again system upgrade and one of the updates (not available yesterday) was X server. This (it seems) resolved the issue and now touchpad is fully functional.
