Fan speeds up on idle because X uses 100% CPU

Hi everyone,

I have a very strange issue here. When I leave my notebook idle the fan starts to speed up. So far I've not been able to find out why.
I just recognized that X is using 100% of my cpu on idle.
Do you have any ideas that could help? It is a HP Compaq 6710 with T7300 Core2duo processor. I know this is a wild guess but is there anything I could have missed installing?
