[Solved] Xorg 1.5 screwed up my NVIDIA

Hi,

Today I did a pacman -Syu and I got the newest NVIDIA driver installed and the newest Xorg. Everything broke. Well not exactly everything. But my settings are all screwed up. For a start my screen refuses to load at the normal resolution (1680x1050). I got a default 1024x860 (or whatever it is). Also my colour depth is 16. And regardless of any changes I make in NVIDIA settings manager the changes never stick. Also my compiz-fusion is totally screwed up. When it starts up my screen goes completely white. I have to blindly alt+F2 and run kwin to be able to do anything.

Also my fonts are really small.

Here is my xorg.conf:

Re: [Solved] Xorg 1.5 screwed up my NVIDIA

Thanks for the advice. I already implemented that and my keyboard works fine because of that. However my display settings and compiz are still all screwed up.

Re: [Solved] Xorg 1.5 screwed up my NVIDIA

Perhaps you could start with an almost empty xorg.conf and see what works then? Make an empty xorg.conf and just add

Section "Device"
    Identifier  "Card0"
    Driver      "nvidia"
EndSection

Then start Xorg and see what works. After that you can start re-adding stuff if necessary. The new xorg is able to figure out a lot on its own in my experience; for me it seems to work fine with just the nvidia section + keyboard layout set in the hal config.

Re: [Solved] Xorg 1.5 screwed up my NVIDIA

if your useing a nvidia-96xx driver i suggest you rollback to a older xorg version exit Xserver run /etc/rc.d/kdm3 stop, then reinstall your nvidia driver then reboot . thats how i fixed the problem.

then i added this to pacman.conf till the problem gets fixed:
IgnorePkg   =xf86-video-vesa
IgnorePkg   =xorg-server-utils
IgnorePkg   =xorg-utils
IgnorePkg   =xorg-server
IgnorePkg   =xorg-xkb-utils
IgnoreGroup =xorg

Odd. I'm using the nvidia drivers with NO issues in either compiz or kwin4.1. As a matter of fact, latest Xorg dramatically sped up Kwin.

Re: [Solved] Xorg 1.5 screwed up my NVIDIA

I have a similar problem involving nvidia-96xx driver. It does work, but it screws up all the text on the screen, so I can't really read anything. Sometimes it helps selecting the text with a cursor, sometimes not. I've tried changing some options in xorg.conf, but didn't solve my problem. Currently, I use an nv driver, temporarily, until I get my problem solved. I'm not even sure if it's possible to solve it, since I don't really have any confirmations from people who run nvidia-96xx that it's working. I would greatly appreciate any help given.

Cheers!

Re: [Solved] Xorg 1.5 screwed up my NVIDIA

Yeah, I'll do that if it turns out that I can't make xorg 7.4 working. Right now, I want to try and solve this thing out, and have an up-to-date system, I hear this version of xorg is greatly improved, and I want to try it out. Still, thanks.

Re: [Solved] Xorg 1.5 screwed up my NVIDIA

I use the "nvidia" driver, and everything looked awful after the system update.
I replaced xorg.conf with a saved copy I had, then used nvidia-xconfig, and everything works fine now. Hope it helps!

@Macdelaney
Do you use nvidia-96xx driver? I'll give it a try, but I tried with nvidia-settings and it doesn't help.

Re: [Solved] Xorg 1.5 screwed up my NVIDIA

Ok, so i tried, but it didn't work. All works but the fonts - they're messed up pretty bad. I can't even read what I'm typing right now. Here are some screenshots (just so you know - it gets even worse than that):

Re: [Solved] Xorg 1.5 screwed up my NVIDIA

@Zeb:

Your solution worked. I removed my old xorg.conf and created a bare-bones xorg.conf as you suggested. Now things are working again. I am still having some trouble getting Compiz-Fusion to play nice. But overall my system is workable again.

Now I have to try and figure out how to make my keyboard work properly with the new Xorg without using the workaround.

hmmm, I have exactly the same problem and I also use the nvidia-96xx.
I noticed that I only get the scrambled text for the lines beyond 20 lines...so if I rescale the height of my window to 20 lines I never get scrambled text and and when I change the height of the window larger then 20 lines, only the 20+ lines get scrambled.

Re: [Solved] Xorg 1.5 screwed up my NVIDIA

We should open up a new thread, maybe someone has found a solution. This thread is labeled solved, I don't think anyone will notice it anymore. Clever observation, btw. Maybe it is useful.
