After i enter startx the screen goes blank for some seconds and dumps me back into console. It says:

xorg 7.4 should auto configure most of the relevant hardware. Try moving your xorg.conf and letting X configure itself

Unfortunately it didn't help. Maybe someone could paste his working xorg.conf for intel 845 graphics?

I have the same problem on my G/F's computer. Let me know if you figure this out.

I am having the very same issues.
Actually I am graduating to Arch from ubuntu and from what I have figured all over this is a major issue with this board and driver as some references are there re upstream issues with intel and thier support for this config.
EVERY single distro that has come up to using kernel x-x 27 and using the new xorg has this problem.
I am using Mandriva for the time being for afew hours as I am determined to get Arch work for me TOO
Mandriva actually gives me the working desktop with correct res 1650x1050 22" monitor but when i log out - bummer - I get blank screen - same as in Ubuntu 8.10 - u go to tty1 and then reboot gracefully yeeeeeeeeeeeeeecks - in ubuntu I always had to use the recovery boot option in grub to get X working again.
OK - here is the xorg.conf which this "Man" has he he but it has screwed my keyboard setings @ and " are mixed - for a few hours i can handle that but ... It has now been nearly 2 months still no solution in the horizon - so many bug reports in every forum - still no light

Nope, it did not help, unfortunately. I still get the very same error.

Hello.
I had the same problem with my old Intel onboard video card - lspci gives this VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device (rev 01)
We also had the problem at work on some Intel video card and Fedora 10.
After we turned off acceleration, it started to work. So i tried same xorg.conf at home and it works.
Rendering is a bit strange/slow - a guess i'll have to disable the dri module or smth.
This is my xorg.conf

Hello,
the hint i'v posted in previous reply is'nt very good.
Disabling Acceleration with "Option "NoAccel" "True""
degrades performance and scroling in browser/moving windows etc. becomes very slow.
So it look's like we have to find another solution;-((

Have these problems been resolved yet? I was wondering if anyone with this gpu had upgraded successfully w/o any problems.

They have not been resolved although the X.org wiki seems to say it works fine [http://www.x.org/wiki/IntelGraphicsDriver]. But I have this setup as well and using the VESA driver has ended this problem for me. Everything is smooth, just no 3D, which should only be enabled if you really need it for games and such.
As an aside @jadoo: if you remove compiz Ubuntu boots fine and you get 3D too, just not Compiz.
EDIT: anyone looking here should check out http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=60211
