Dual layer DVD

ok my burner has the ability to do dual layer disks.

I only have so many blank ones and I want to make sure this works the first time.

Question:
1.Do I need specific burning software to be able to burn these disks correctly or does it not matter as long as the hardware is capable?

2. if I need specific software does anyone know of a good one?

I suppose the old standards K3b, Brasero and Nero-Linux would be the first ones I'd check out.
