Cannot find innittab

Can't say I havent properly googled this one but id like an explenation of whats wrong.

I recently installed the arch from the 'archlinux-2008.06-core-i686.iso' image file.

It works fine at the install and when I boot it. But its when I install some package(not sure what) that it breaks. I think its when I install KDE or xorg

(its done this twice now) an error comes when I try to boot arch that says something like 'innitab could not be found'. Then it just stops and dont boot.

Now I tried looking in the filesystem for innitab from another OS and like it said it doesent exist, or changed name. So I tried restoring it but then it

couldnt find ANOTHER file (cant remember name) and apperently all the files in that directory had changed name or something so it couldnt locate it or was gone.

When I tried restoring all another file was missing or another error. The point is that something is wrong, cant go replacing important systemfiles and pretend its working, what should I do about it?

Im a fairly new linuxuser so I get stuck when the system actually not booting.

Re: Cannot find innittab

/etc/inittab
it's necessary for booting and i'm pretty sure that installing no package would delete that file. btw it belongs to the package initscripts (which you have to have installed in order to be able to boot).

Re: Cannot find innittab

Okay, pretty weird thing, you think it has something to do with updating initscripts?

It works the first times I try booting, but then the only thing I do is install packages so I can get a desktop environment working, but then it just

stops working. I have used previous versions of arch and its worked fine with this (except this time I tried kde4). What suggestions are there to solve this?

Should I just reinstall and hope it doesent come back?

Re: Cannot find innittab

Well you should first check if the file is really there; then maybe reinstall initscripts (if it's possible; even if you can't boot, if you have another linux installed, you can chroot). If that doesn't fix it, then the problem is something a bit deeper. In that case, it would help if you could get precise error message you get when you try to boot, maybe with a couple of lines before that.

Re: Cannot find innittab

Just a side-note here: you don't need an actual "other" Linux installation in order to perform the chroot, just use the arch linux install cd.
