Arch cannot handle 4GB SD card

Hi helpful Archers,

Anyone else having this problem?  My Arch system handles a smaller SD card (I have a 512 MB one), but not my 4GB one. This card is handled easily by a Xandros system, so I know the card is fine. Here is the dmesg output when I put the card in:

usb-storage: device scan complete
usb 1-5: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6
usb 1-5: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
scsi8 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
usb-storage: device found at 6
usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
scsi 8:0:0:0: Direct-Access     USB2.0   CF  CardReader   9144 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0
usb 1-5: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6
sd 8:0:0:0: Device offlined - not ready after error recovery
sd 8:0:0:0: rejecting I/O to offline device
sd 8:0:0:0: rejecting I/O to offline device
sd 8:0:0:0: rejecting I/O to offline device
sd 8:0:0:0: [sdc] READ CAPACITY failed
sd 8:0:0:0: [sdc] Result: hostbyte=0x01 driverbyte=0x00
sd 8:0:0:0: [sdc] Sense not available.
sd 8:0:0:0: rejecting I/O to offline device
sd 8:0:0:0: [sdc] Write Protect is off
sd 8:0:0:0: [sdc] Mode Sense: 00 00 00 00
sd 8:0:0:0: [sdc] Assuming drive cache: write through
sd 8:0:0:0: [sdc] Attached SCSI removable disk
sd 8:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg2 type 0
usb-storage: device scan complete
usb 1-5: USB disconnect, address 6

I don't understand why the device is "offlined". Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Arch cannot handle 4GB SD card

Thanks, I was thinking that might be the case.

Re: Arch cannot handle 4GB SD card

Regular SD card readers cannot read SDHC cards. It might be that you need an SDHC capable reader.

Re: Arch cannot handle 4GB SD card

Ah thanks, I didn't know there was a difference. The machine with Arch on it is a few years old. Do you think it's the motherboard or the actual card slot that cannot handle SDHC?
