Is ArchLinux Suitable?

I am going to use ArchLinux to play a little with kernel hacking and I want to know if it's suitable. I ask this beacause ArchLinux does not use a vanilla kernel at all.
Is ArchLinux suitable for this task?

Every OS that uses the linux kernel is suitable for this task

There shouldn't be any reason to learn more editor types than emacs or vi -- mg (1)

with that small number of patches do you think that archlinux doesn't have a vanilla kernel?:)

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Re: Is ArchLinux Suitable?

You can always install a vanilla kernel alongside the default Arch kernel.

I did It and I'm a complete n00b .

This wiki gives you straightforward instructions :

If you want to get your hands dirty with kernel configurations , This book is quite popular around here to help you achieve that:

Sounds good, I used to use slackware alot, but once I found the existence of ArchLinux with it's package manager ... I use it instead. Slackware feels a lot more bloated, at least the default install. Plus, it uses some old packages, granted, stable indeed!

There aint many people still running slack or am I wrong? Last time I heard, most pro's were running debian.

Slackware was very used in the past, but nowadays, its use is only declining. There may be various reasons for this, I bet on the culprits being the lack of a real package management system and too centralized development.

+1
Your vimrc isn't available anymore:(

To stay on topic:
I would say arch is very suited to mess with kernels. Of course you can do it on any distro, but I feel arch won't get in the way as much as most distro's would:)

Re: Is ArchLinux Suitable?

Any distro is suitable...  Doesn't Linus use Fedora these days?

Anyway, if you are using Arch and like it, then there is no reason to switch.

Edit:  confusing spelling mistake...

Fedora? That's bloated. Linus uses Fedora? Strange ...
Well, without him we would not argue these days ... so I guess his amirite is/was quite good.

Re: Is ArchLinux Suitable?

It's not strange that Linus uses Fedora .. and it's not strange that Knuth uses Ubuntu .. and it's not strange that Ulrich Drepper uses RedHat/Fedora (well actually this one is quite natural). It is a common misconception that "knowledgeable users" use Arch/Slackware/Gentoo/Debian and such.

BTW: amirite = "am I right"

Re: Is ArchLinux Suitable?

It was around year 2000 when Linus checked out distros for the last time . Apparently , he didn't check or have the time to check again .

Whenever he is interviewed and asked about distros , his answer goes like "Why would I use something very complicated like Debian and waste my time" .

Linus choice is not even close to be considered a technical one .
