As a foreword for this thread, I have never previously owned a webcam in my life. With that said, I should like to ask if there is any recommended models that would work with most Linux software out of the box (since I have no experience with v4l devices). Preferably something cheap (as is, not above 100$) and that should work with VLC.
I would like to be able to use it just to tinker with, as I won't be using it as streaming webcam across the internet. Just meerly for enjoyment and testing. Being able to stream in across the network (somehow) and view it (live) through VLC and record (if that is possible) are my goals.

I just got a creative webcam instant at frys for $14 I had installed the inux-uvc driver from the archlinux wiki webcam and it works out of the box. The video color is not great, but for $14 what else do you want.
