Xorg - Excessive CPU usage causes massive slowdown.

Hello there forums.

Ever since the installation of Arch I've had the strange problem of having my Xorg process randomly (but quite frequently) spike up to 100% or somewhere within those reaches. This renders the computer totally unusable (think alsa-mixer lagging like crazy) for an average of two seconds, repeating a couple of times over the next minutes, whereafter it generally gives me a break.

Here follows my /etc/X11/xorg.conf :

Additionally I don't believe that my desktop uses the grapd-card at all (even though I've got RenderAccel) since algorithmic screensavers like the coral reef that comes with xscreensaver lags when it starts to fill up the entire screen.

If any further info is needed just ask.

Computer specs:
64-bit system.
2.26GHz P8400
4 Gigs RAM
GeForce 9700m GT

Re: Xorg - Excessive CPU usage causes massive slowdown.

Use the 'Nvidia X Server Settings' utility ( in Applications > System ) to check that your card is being used.
That'll allow us to progress a little further.

Re: Xorg - Excessive CPU usage causes massive slowdown.

Card seems to be working but PowerMizer indicates that it's working on maximum performance (perf. mode) but only on perf. level 0, which is NV-clock 169MHz and Memory Clock 100MHz.
The next three levels have been grayed out.

As additional info I'll add that if lag occurs it can be remedied (a bit at least) by moving the mouse, have no clue why.

Re: Xorg - Excessive CPU usage causes massive slowdown.

Have you checked for any conflicts / problems in the log files ( /var/log/ ) ?

These, especially the "Xorg.0.log", file should help with the problem.

Let us know if you find anything.

The main problems I see is that my ACPI doesn't seem to kick in and that my synaptics touchpad doesn't work properly (but that's a problem for a different thread).

Re: Xorg - Excessive CPU usage causes massive slowdown.

It's not the (WW)s you want to worry about, it's the (EE)s !
ACPI, forget it for the minute, not important.
What is important is the module 'Record' - comment it out in your xorg.conf and
the hal issue. Do you have the 'hal' daemon loaded in /etc/rc.conf ?

e.g.

DAEMONS=(hal syslog-ng @network @netfs @crond)
