pm-suspend runs fine, and the notebook enters suspend immediately.
When the power button is pressed, the disc drive makes its characteristic "wake up noise", the fan turns on, and the sleep indicator light turns off. However, the computer does not actually turn on. The only way to restore the system is to hold down the power button for a few seconds, until it turns off, and start from a cold boot.
The pm-suspend logs do not contain any record of an attempted resume - the last message in the log is "performing suspend".
