(Workaround-ed) Xorg crashes on logout with latest nVidia driver

I can enter a DE through the login just fine after a clean startup or a reboot. It's just that after I logout using Ctrl Alt Backspace, it just keeps crashing and won't bring me to the login screen again.

Here's my xorg.conf:

Well, yes, but it always brings be to the GDM/KDM login screen again. But now it just goes blank and then a blue dialog will appear saying "X server has crashed, boo hoo hoo"

What if you logout correctly? What happens then?

Nope. Still the same. It logs out, tries to log back in, then crashes then tries to go back in... etc.

Re: (Workaround-ed) Xorg crashes on logout with latest nVidia driver

What error messages do you get?
Do you have to reboot to get X working again?
What happen if you run startx, kill x (ctrl+alt+backspace), and then startx again?

It seems like it's something to do with my mouse/keyboard.

I had to reboot to get into X again.

Re: (Workaround-ed) Xorg crashes on logout with latest nVidia driver

I've put up a bugzilla entry about it. https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19294

proxima_centauri, I recommend you to put up your xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log on there as well. You have the exact same laptop as mine. Even the OSs installed and HD space. Only difference is RAM, mine is 2x1Gb Samsung. What a coincidence.. hehe

Re: (Workaround-ed) Xorg crashes on logout with latest nVidia driver

Zephyrus17,

A lot of people are having this problem as reported here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/258357

One user one solution to keep the latest drivers "A workaround for this is to increse the GdmXserverTimeout from 10 seconds to 60 seconds. Its seems that X needs more time to perform its required task. You can find the parameter in /etc/gdm/gdm.conf" I havn't tested it myself but it appeared to work for others

Another solution is to downgrade the NVIDIA driver to 173xx which I tried and it works.

Guess I'll have to wait for some kind of bugfix for new drivers.

Re: (Workaround-ed) Xorg crashes on logout with latest nVidia driver

I'll try the first method, then. I'll come back with the results

EDIT: I don't have /etc/gdm/gdm.conf
I do have /etc/gdm/custom.conf, though.

Re: (Workaround-ed) Xorg crashes on logout with latest nVidia driver

Oh yea, thats for ubuntu. The /etc/gdm/custom.conf file in Arch should overwrite the relavent file under /usr/share/gdm/defaults.conf so it either or.

Change or add this
# How long gdm should wait before it assumes a started Xserver is defunct and
# kills it.  10 seconds should be long enough for X, but Xgl may need 20 or 25.
GdmXserverTimeout=60

Right. That did the trick. I'll go update the bugzilla entry.

Re: (Workaround-ed) Xorg crashes on logout with latest nVidia driver

I wonder if this has been fixed in the new nvidia 180 drivers... I'll post back when I get the initiative to ctrl+alt+backspace tongue

Ok.. I'll have a look, myself. But give us a heads up if the 180 works by default

Re: (Workaround-ed) Xorg crashes on logout with latest nVidia driver

I'm also experiencing the same issue and I also have a T61p with Quadro FX 570M.  I'm using the latest drivers (180.22) and it's still gave me the same symptoms.

I followed the instructions that "zephyrus17" provided in the bugzilla report and I can say that it resolved the issue for me.

Re: (Workaround-ed) Xorg crashes on logout with latest nVidia driver

Ditto here
I tryed editing /etc/gdm/custom.conf and adding the GdmXserver timeout, and it didn't seem to work.
And just now going into gedit to look at it, there's nothing there anymore :S
Can either of you post your custom.conf for me please.

Re: (Workaround-ed) Xorg crashes on logout with latest nVidia driver

# GDM Custom Configuration file.
#
# This file is the appropriate place for specifying your customizations to the
# GDM configuration. If you run gdmsetup, it will automatically edit this
# file for you and will cause the daemon and any running GDM GUI programs to
# automatically update with the new configuration. Not all configuration
# options are supported by gdmsetup, so to modify some values it may be
# necessary to modify this file directly by hand.
#
# This file overrides the default configuration settings. These settings
# are stored in the GDM System Defaults configuration file, which is found
# at the following location.
#
# /usr/share/gdm/defaults.conf.
#
# This file contains comments about the meaning of each configuration option,
# so is also a useful reference. Also refer to the documentation links at
# the end of this comment for further information. In short, to hand-edit
# this file, simply add or modify the key=value combination in the
# appropriate section in the template below this comment section.
#
# For example, if you want to specify a different value for the Enable key
# in the "[debug]" section of your GDM System Defaults configuration file,
# then add "Enable=true" in the "[debug]" section of this file. If the
# key already exists in this file, then simply modify it.
#
# Older versions of GDM used the "gdm.conf" file for configuration. If your
# system has an old gdm.conf file on the system, it will be used instead of
# this file - so changes made to this file will not take effect. Consider
# migrating your configuration to this file and removing the gdm.conf file.
#
# If you hand edit a GDM configuration file, you can run the following
# command and the GDM daemon will immediately reflect the change. Any
# running GDM GUI programs will also be notified to update with the new
# configuration.
#
# gdmflexiserver --command="UPDATE_CONFIG <configuration key>"
#
# e.g, the "Enable" key in the "[debug]" section would be "debug/Enable".
#
# You can also run gdm-restart or gdm-safe-restart to cause GDM to restart and
# re-read the new configuration settings. You can also restart GDM by sending
# a HUP or USR1 signal to the daemon. HUP behaves like gdm-restart and causes
# any user session started by GDM to exit immediately while USR1 behaves like
# gdm-safe-restart and will wait until all users log out before restarting GDM.
#
# For full reference documentation see the gnome help browser under
# GNOME|System category. You can also find the docs in HTML form on
# http://www.gnome.org/projects/gdm/
#
# NOTE: Lines that begin with "#" are considered comments.
#
# Have fun!

Re: (Workaround-ed) Xorg crashes on logout with latest nVidia driver

Thanks for that zephyrus, I have a feeling that it didn't work for me because I didn't have it under [daemon]. I'll try a X restart when I feel like rebooting again.
Disappointing that this issue was not resolved with the nvidia-180.22 sad

Yeah.. The nVidia people probably didn't see the bug in bugzilla, or by the time it was reported, it was too late to add the fix to the 180 release
