I have croat keyboard layout and it is fine while it isn't used under X. While running X server i can't use some special keys (which you have to use in combination with alt), for example:
backslash, monkey,...

...and that is exactly what KEYMAP in rc.conf controls.
While running X server i can't use some special keys (which you have to use in combination with alt), for example: backslash, monkey,...
...and for this you setup X to hr layout (XkbLayout in xorg.conf or hal policy file).
You need to install an RTFM interface.

Take a look at the wiki:

But first you can test if it will work, executing
setxkbmap hr
(or whatever you normally use instead of hr)
inside X on a terminal.

You already have one, its the "@" sign. This sign has a convoluted history.
I dont know croatian , but the germans call it "Klammeraffen" which means "spider monkey" and the portuguese "arroba" and its a
weight of 25 KG.
