Can't select packages

I'm using the ftp ISO CDROM, and all is going well - network is up, hard disk is partitioned, but I can't select packages. No matter whether I choose a mirror from the list, or a custom one not listed (there are a few local ones not listed), I get the same error: after "Refreshing package database..."  instead of a list of packages, I get a list which says

[*]  Error
[*]  Expected

What's going on here, and how do I get past this bottleneck?

Thanks,
-A. (linux user since kernel 0.99, new to Arch linux)

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Re: Can't select packages

Thanks - I just discovered that by doing a forum search (which I should have done before asking my question).  Anyway, I'm sending this from my brand-spanking new Arch linux set-up!  All very nice so far.
