[Solved] Xorg won't start with nvidia driver

Hi there.. just got Arch installed, everything worked fine. now i wanted to install the nvidia driver for my 9600GT.

i tried the search, but couldn't find anything for this problem.

so here's what happend:

i did

pacman -Sy nvidia

and changed my xorg.conf first manually according to the wiki, and after that didn't work, i tried nivida-xconfig.

when i tried to restart X, i got following error:

FATAL: module nvidia not found
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to load the Nvidia kernel module!
(EE) NVIDIA(0):  *** Aborting ***
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

help!

"pacman -Sy nvidia" doesn't install anything. It just syncs the rep databases. To install, you have to do "pacman -S nvidia".

pacman -Sy does install nvidia!

@topic: if you have further questions, post your xorg.conf

Re: [Solved] Xorg won't start with nvidia driver

afaik it doesn't mean anything, you could have called it "hot and sexy device" and if it had been called that throughout the xorg.conf it would have made no difference at all... See: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xor … otplugging which basically says you don't need an xorg.conf anymore.. well just read it, it will explain all..
