When migrating to GRUB2, should GRUB be removed using pacman, or does installing GRUB2 actually overwrite all of the older GRUB files?
I didn't see it mentioned in the wiki, or in any other posts about GRUB2, but I see no point in having any leftovers from the older version remaining on the drive if they aren't needed.
Thanks.
Edit: added SOLVED tag.

grub2 will overwrite grub. You probably already saw it, but this is what I ended up doing:

Thanks, skottish... about to migrate within the next 30 minutes, or so!

Well, the migration is delayed just a bit because mirror is temporarily down, but for anyone else wondering about this, pacman does remove the old GRUB for you:
# pacman -S grub2

Up and running, and all seems fine!

Just wondering about something... the removal of GRUB still leaves all the *stage1_5 files in the GRUB folder. It's my understanding that GRUB2 eliminates the need for the 1.5 stage, so does anyone know if those files can be safely removed?

I can't answer that question directly, but my guess is that they're still there as a fall back. It took me a bunch of failed tries to get my grub2 config working, and all I needed to do to boot into the system was move menu.lst.pacsave back to menu.lst. If you do that, you're booting into grub and not grub2.

Just an update for anyone that might be interested:
I've gone ahead and deleted all the *stage1_5 files and all seems fine so far. Will post back if problems should begin to show themselves.

skottish, it worked first time for me, but I've already removed the pacsave file, and now all the 1.5 stage files so it appears that I'm deep into GRUB2 territory.

I wonder why it does something with your old menu.lst file. Did you install grub2 with grub-install after replacing grub on your machine?

Err... no. In reality I'm polluting this thread with nonsense. I had no f**king idea what I was doing before. I cleverly left out the story in the other thread.
Does someone have a banhammer?
