xboard engines question

Maybe I am overlooking something ridiculously simple, but how can I get crafty to do book openings, or even random openings? Every time I open e4, crafty responds Nc6. Every time I open d4, crafty opens e6. Same for gnuchess, except it answers d4 with d5. I'd like to get some variation without having to set up the board in advance! tongue

btw, I found these pixmaps for xboard - they are *really* nice and really enhance the look:

I'm not sure if they are open source/copyleft or not (the front page says "free themed pixmaps," but I think he means free in the sense of free beer wink), but I'd really like to get them into arch if possible. The problem would be where to install them, since the user would have to specify the directory for which pixmap set to use. I guess somewhere in the users' home directory? they're relatively big. I only d/loaded 5 of  the 13, and those together are almost half a gig. Anyway, they are pretty nice.

edit: fixed link
