Wierd Shutdown Problem -- Nothing Shown

I have both a laptop and desktop machine running Arch -- latest updates and everything (but no testing repo). The laptop is i686 and the desktop is x86_64.

When I shut down the laptop I see the list of messages about stopping this and that and saving the clock and all that stuff.  I've always seen the same on the desktop until I think last week.  When I shut down the desktop it just shows a flashing cursor in the top left of the screen. It shuts down fine, and doesn't act like it crashed when I start it up again -- I just don't see any messages scrolling by.

I'm using Gnome and GDM on both machines, and they are set up as closely as possible to identical.  Has anyone seen this?  It's almost as though the desktop is switching to a different console that the one showing the shutdown message, but I don't know.

Any clues as I try to hunt this down?

Re: Wierd Shutdown Problem -- Nothing Shown

I get this from time to time and looking in /var/log/messages.log at next boot (when I've been bothered) it seems to coincide with some component of gnome breaking badly on shutdown, e.g. gdm segfaulting.  Something like:

Dec 22 23:05:28 darkstar init: Switching to runlevel: 0
Dec 22 23:05:29 bonobo-activation-server (david-11394): could not associate with desktop session: Failed to connect to socket /tmp/dbus-T8uBrhdhep: Connection refused
Dec 22 23:05:30 darkstar console-kit-daemon[3579]: GLib-GObject-WARNING: instance of invalid non-instantiatable type `<invalid>'
Dec 22 23:05:32 darkstar ntpd[3885]: Terminating
Dec 22 23:05:33 darkstar dhcpcd[3525]: eth0: received SIGTERM, stopping

doesn't have the same effect and it doesn't happen if compiz segfaults on shutdown.

Re: Wierd Shutdown Problem -- Nothing Shown

Oh!  That may be it!  There was an issue with linuxwacom that I was goofing around with.  I removed that ans we'll see how it goes now!

Thanks!
