I've decided to dump my Ubuntu 8.10 install and go Arch. I have
an old machine I tested installation on and I'm very impressed. Can't
wait to get Arch on my main dev box.
One thing that's sort of confusing me is which files I'm supposed to
be updating later in the HAL wiki page. Starting with the
'Allow dmask and fmask for ntfs-3g' section and continuing on thru
the following sections:
Set iPod mountpoint
Auto-mount only removable media
Enable the noatime mount option for removable devices
Which file(s) am I supposed to be editing?
I've always uses distros which take care of this. I'm learning
tons.
Any help appreciated.

HAL policies go in /etc/hal/fdi/policy and apply to all devices not defined in /etc/fstab.

I had similar questions with this a while ago. From what I can gather, HAL just reads all the files in the /etc/hal/fdi/policy folder with the extension .fdi. So, it really doesn't matter what you name the file so long as it ends with the extension .fdi. In this case, just pick common sense names, for example, ntfs-drives.fdi, removable-drives.fdi or something like that. Whatever works for you.
You could even combine them all into the same file if you want, eg. preferences.fdi.
