insane HAL security issue

About a day ago I started receiving this error whenever I insert a DVD or try to shutdown my laptop:

A security policy in place prevents this sender from sending this message to this recipient, see message bus configuration file (rejected message had interface "org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume" member "Eject" error name "(unset)" destination "org.freedesktop.Hal")

After much research, I'm still at a total loss. My "/etc/dbus-1/system.d/hal.conf" file indicates hal is looking for users of groups "storage" or "power" as it should, and my user is in both groups. However I still get the error message. If I change <policy user="0"> to <policy user="my_username"> it works just fine. So telling HAL which user to allow works, but telling HAL which groups to allow does not work.

Could the problem be with HAL, or is it maybe with my group file (and to be honest, I don't fully understand the intricacies between group, shadow, gshadow, passwd, etc...)

Any help would be most excellent. This is my first actual post, but I've used these forums countless times for help.
Also, if anyone needs to seen anything, like my /etc/group or hal.conf I'll put them up.
