You are not logged in.
I have 'wicd-client &' listed in my ~/.config/openbox/autostart.sh...half of the time OB likes this and I am rewarded with a wicd tray icon when I log in. The rest of the time wicd-client doesn't start so I initiate it manually.
Also autostarting urxvt in kuake mode goes catatonic at times as well, just not as often.
Any idea what's going on?

Have you tried starting them through .xinitrc?

Do you start it without delay or with? Some apps don't load properly without delay for me, so i use some 2-3 secs delay for different apps.
