startx errors

kde4 works when i hit startx as root but as a normal user it doesnt and i get the following errors:

(EE) Failed to load module "record" (module does not exist, 0)
could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/TTF, removing from list!
could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/Type1, removing from list!
(EE) config/hal: NewInputDeviceRequest failed
(EE) config/hal: NewInputDeviceRequest failed
(EE) config/hal: NewInputDeviceRequest failed
(EE) config/hal: NewInputDeviceRequest failed
(EE) config/hal: NewInputDeviceRequest failed
(EE) config/hal: NewInputDeviceRequest failed

i dont know if i get those errors as root but kde at least opens slowly.

I am running nvidia on a t61p thinkpad.

It is a guess but do you have the hal daemon running?   Post your xorg.conf.

yeah its running.  Also when i log in as root i still get some of those hal/config errors but it does load some devices.  but as a normal user it just prompts with those errors and shuts down X
