How to record PCM output?

I'm really at a brick wall with this.  All I want to do is record the PCM output to an MP3.  In XP I could use All Sound Recorder but in Arch I'm trying Audacity and VLC.  In audacity I can only manage to get little blurbs recorded or I'll get a recording with a ton of hiss on top of the microphone input (I don't get any hiss on the default sound recorder).  There are 5 different "mic" option, i've tried them all and they all either do nothing or record the built-in mics.  I got completely lost with VLC.

Are there any solutions to my problem?

Here's a screenshot of my setup if it helps any:  frankly it's looking like my sound card doesn't support this under Linux

Re: How to record PCM output?

I can see on your screenshot that the mic is muted... could it be something ?
Also it's preferable to not have the levels to 100 %, you will get better sound quality with lower values.

Re: How to record PCM output?

I think ext mic might be for if i plug a mic into my computer whereas int mic is my integrated microphones.  Either way I can record my internal mics fine via "Sound Recorder".  I'll try again to unmute/crank up ext mic just in case it is PCM but I think I've tried that already.  Yeah no joy.

Re: How to record PCM output?

It's the int mic that seems to be muted... Just in case you can mute/unmute with key "m" under alsamixer, it's turning green when unmuted and the "MM" becomes "00".
I'm really not expert , so I might be wrong with this anyway roll

Re: How to record PCM output?

Oh that one is a playback int mic (just loops the mic back to the speakers)

Damn...73 views and not solved....told ya it was a brick wall smile  Looking into it more I'm just going to declare this as "Driver's don't support this feature on linux" (unless someone knows otherwise).

Can be done with jack-capture http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=13768 you will also need jack-audio-connection-kit and possibly qjackctl (QT frontend), both from extra.

You need to install an RTFM interface.

Please, don't post the full sized screenshot, rather use a thumbnail with a link to the original.

Re: How to record PCM output?

In audacity, you can record directly from the soundcard. So you don't need to use the mic therefore you won't get any background noise. To do that, I think you need to go in the preferences and select your soundcard as the recording device. Then you just play the sound as you would normally do while audacity is recording.

@Snowman:  I just can't make that work. I don't know why, though.  I just never get sound OR I get garbage/static.
