Submitting new packages

What's the process for submitting requests for new packages to be included in one of the Arch package repositories?  I know that packages can be added to the AUR, but I'd like to know how to request packages get added to the appropriate main repositories (core, extra, community).  Or, if all packages are supposed to go through AUR, then how is the decision made to move any given one into the official repositories?

I'm trying to get a better understaing of how this process is done.  I haven't been able to find any good prior discussion or documentation on the subject (though I'm sure it must exist somewhere).

Thanks.

Re: Submitting new packages

If a package has enough votes in the AUR it will be considered to be moved into [community] as far as I know.

Re: Submitting new packages

A new package will be added to core or extra if a dev thinks it should be there, and enough other devs agree. A new package will be added to community if a TU thinks it should be there. AUR votes are also taken into consideration for community packages, but they are not necessarily a deciding factor.

New packages are not required to go through the AUR first, although in practice many of them do - probably the majority of them, although I do not have any stats on that.

They are, besides pkgstats statistics, a deciding factor. TU bylaws changed recently regarding this.

Re: Submitting new packages

Ok, cool.  Thanks for the info.  So although promoting a package through AUR is not required, it sounds like the easiest and most common way to get a package into the official repositories, right?

Re: Submitting new packages

Definitely. As was previously stated, the two places we really look to determine whether or not a package rates being put in community are pkgstats and the votes on AUR... so promote away! If one of us takes notice, your package may find it's way into community (or extra if a dev takes notice tongue)
