So I've run this a few times. and I keep getting
::xorg conflicts with ttf-bitstream-vera. Remove ttf-bitstream-vera? [Y/n]
if I answer yes, I get error: xfree86 conflicts with xorg. If I answer no I get error: package conflicts detected.
Any insight on how I can get past this? I've tried using pacman -R xfree86 but that errors out with all the dependancies
[root@littleone /]# pacman -R xfree86
error: This will break the following dependencies:
xfree86 is required by gtk
xfree86 is required by fnlib
xfree86 is required by gdk-pixbuf
xfree86 is required by pango
xfree86 is required by lesstif
xfree86 is required by qt
xfree86 is required by sdl
xfree86 is required by startup-notification

xfree86 is required by tk
xfree86 is required by gentoo
xfree86 is required by ghostscript
xfree86 is required by libxklavier

any ideas?
Edit: I think I fixed it with pacman -Rc xfree86 and then pacman -Syu it's installing/upgrading everything now

I think pacman -Rd xfree86 would have been a better option, because it would have skipped dependency checks.
And where were all the sportsmen who always pulled you though?

It is a better option. With my broadsword method I borked something pretty hard and ended up reinstalling and using your method. Worked flawlessly first time out

Was your system up-to-date when you attempted this the firstime. When i installed Xorg it just outright replaced Xfree86. Another option would have been to not have even installed xfree86 when you reinstalled. Then updated what you did have installled then installed xorg.
I am just really wanted to figure out what is occasionally causing this issue to come up. I suspect that users system are not current. the XFree86 on the cd likely has a different set-up which does not enable a smooth transition to xorg.

Yea unfortunately I wasn't able to get my network running during the installationa nd ahd to go off the CD and get the card to run post mortem. So you're probably right as far as why the move over was a little prickly
