I've switched to openbox from xfce for some time ago, evertyhing is nice except one thing. In xfce there's pannel applet that allows me to change between languages and it stores the language for each process(window??? not sure about this). After wasting some time googling for language switchers that hang in the tray i only could find fbxkb which shows me current layout but it doesn't store the layouts i've used for different processes which is annoying as i write lot's of stupid things here there and everywhere before i realize that i'm writing in wrong language... Does anyone know such application?

if you only need 2 languages, you could set up Xorg to do that, and maybe the CAPS LED as an indicator (caps is useless anyways imho)
edit: argh, that wouldnt work like how you need it

for indicators you should prepare your own image(s) in xpm format. I did it with GIMP.
Then you need config file .xxkbrc in your home directory. I made my while reading man page. Here it is:
XXkb.image.path: /home/roman/.xxkb/
XXkb.mainwindow.enable: yes
XXkb.mainwindow.in_tray: yes
XXkb.mainwindow.geometry: 20x20+0+0
XXkb.mainwindow.border.color: black
XXkb.mainwindow.border.width: 1
XXkb.mainwindow.image.1: us20.xpm
XXkb.mainwindow.image.2: ua20.xpm
XXkb.mainwindow.image.3: ua20.xpm
XXkb.mainwindow.image.4: ua20.xpm
XXkb.mainwindow.label.enable: yes
XXkb.mainwindow.label.text.1: en
XXkb.mainwindow.label.text.2: ua
XXkb.mainwindow.label.background: black
XXkb.mainwindow.label.foreground: white
XXkb.mainwindow.label.font: -misc-*-r-*-20-*
XXkb.controls.add_when_start: yes
XXkb.controls.add_when_create: yes
XXkb.controls.add_when_change: no
XXkb.controls.focusout: no
XXkb.controls.button_delete: yes
XXkb.controls.button_delete_and_forget: yes
XXkb.controls.two_state: yes
XXkb.group.base: 1
XXkb.group.alt: 2
XXkb.button.enable: yes
XXkb.button.geometry: 15x15+29+5
XXkb.button.image.1: us15.xpm
XXkb.button.image.2: ua15.xpm
XXkb.button.image.3: ua15.xpm
XXkb.button.image.4: ua15.xpm
XXkb.button.label.enable: yes
XXkb.button.label.text.1: en
XXkb.button.label.text.2: ua
XXkb.button.label.background: black
XXkb.button.label.foreground: white
XXkb.button.border.color: black
XXkb.button.border.width: 1
XXkb.button.label.font: -misc-*-r-*-20-*
XXkb.bell.enable: no
XXkb.bell.percent: -50
XXkb.app_list.wm_name.ignore:
XXkb.mainwindow.type: tray
My xpm files I placed in ~/.xxkb/ and it works perfect for me
