.vimrc file not being read?

I'm trying to set indentation settings in my ~/.vimrc file, but for some reason they're not coming into effect. Are there certain cases where the .vimrc file is not read?

Re: .vimrc file not being read?

Maybe it's looking for .virc instead of .vimrc? I believe this is the case with the `vi' package (although it provides a lightweight vim).

Re: .vimrc file not being read?

Ah! I forgot! I made an alias for vi, called vim, when I was setting up my comp. I kept typing vim instead of vi when I was editing conf files. I didn't have the actual vim package installed... so I was using actually using vi! But it's confusing that it says: VIM - VI Improved when I start up vi...

Thanks. That was a stupid mistake. Beware of aliases!
