kernel26 2.6.28-3: touchpad doesn't move cursor, touchpad buttons work

I issued a "sudo pacman -Syu" today.  The following are the packages which were updated:

After updating and rebooting, I notice my laptop touchpad no longer works.  A USB optical mouse does work, and the touchpad mouse buttons work, but I cannot use the touchpad to move the mouse whatsoever.  I have hotplugging disabled in xorg.conf.

I don't have a clue which package could have affected this... any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
[EDIT]: On a hunch, I rolled back to kernel26 2.6.27.10-1, and my touchpad is working again.  Clearly this is a problem with the new kernel.  Suggestions are still appreciated, as I'd like to stay up-to-date!

Do you have xf86-input-synaptics?

Re: kernel26 2.6.28-3: touchpad doesn't move cursor, touchpad buttons work

No, I never needed it before.  It isn't a synaptics touchpad.  It's an Elantech.  The laptop is a Clevo M40AE.

Also, I just rolled back to kernel26 2.6.27.10-1, and my touchpad works fine again.  I'll edit the thread's subject line to reflect that this is a confirmed kernel issue.

Elantechs use the synaptics driver now as of 2.6.28. It should work if you install that package and the new kernel.

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but how do you know this?  I'm relatively new to the Linux world and I'm just curious how I might be able to keep up with these sort of changes myself.

Thanks!

Re: kernel26 2.6.28-3: touchpad doesn't move cursor, touchpad buttons work

Asus EeePCs use elantech touchpads and there was all kinds of talk about it in the threads about these machines. I also do a lot of googling and checking this wiki and the gentoo wiki if I have a problem I can't figure out.

Also, read package announcements and skim all the arch forums for a minute before you do big upgrades to see if anybody else is having issues and if they are being solved.

Hey, I had similar confusion with the synaptics stuff, I didn't understand why I needed it now and not before.  Lots of googling set me straight.  I posted some info and links in the following thread which helped me understand what was going on.

Thanks again for your replies.  However, even after upgrading and intalling xf86-input-synaptics, it still doesn't work.  I have also tried enabling hotplugging and modifying xorg.conf as in the Arch wiki, but nothing seems to help.  How did you manage to get yours to work?

Re: kernel26 2.6.28-3: touchpad doesn't move cursor, touchpad buttons work

My Elantech touchpad won't work in Arch Linux with the 2.6.28 kernel either. I get a bunch of garbage in the kernel messages like below:

I do not have an fdl file for the Synaptics driver. Is that necessary? Also, I'm wondering if this could be connected to Ubuntu Bug #34501.

Re: kernel26 2.6.28-3: touchpad doesn't move cursor, touchpad buttons work

I've been using it without hotplugging. It worked fine for me after the upgrade and a little bit of fooling with the synaptics settings. The default speed settings were really, really slow and I had to get rid of the edge settings to get a single-finger tap to work, but other than that no major problems.

Would you mind posting your Synaptics section of your Xorg configuration?

Re: kernel26 2.6.28-3: touchpad doesn't move cursor, touchpad buttons work

I found a workaround for my problem  (which I think is similar to yours) with my Elantech Touchpad restoring a kernel 2.6.27-like behavior:

Re: kernel26 2.6.28-3: touchpad doesn't move cursor, touchpad buttons work

Sorry if it seems like I've neglected this thread - I haven't.  I've been rather busy with my computer lately and haven't had any time free where I wouldn't mind losing my touchpad in order try to fix it.  When I have time I'll try each of the solutions posted here until I find one that works.

Thank you all for the replies.

This worked just fine for me.  Thank you very much, Tommi!
I'd still be interested in an "intended" solution, but using the synaptic driver simply doesn't do it for me.

[edit] whoops, didn't mean to double-post.  I would merge this with the post above, but apparently we can't delete our own posts here.  D:
