Help with dvd mount fstab file?

Okay Ive got a strange situation. First my dvd drive works and k3b can read and write dvd's. But the icon will not show up in a normal nautilus only in a root nautilus but even when I click on the icon it says file system is incorrect. Also my usb drive which works fine, icon will only be visible in a root nautilus. But it does work fine I would just like to be able to access it as a regular user.

Here is my fstab

  GNU nano 2.0.7              File: /etc/fstab

#
# /etc/fstab: static file system information
#

none                   /dev/shm      tmpfs     defaults            0

/dev/dvd /media/dvd   auto    ro,users,unhide     0       0
/dev/sdb1 /mnt/usb    vfat    rw,users  0       0

UUID=e9a324f7-bed8-46ec-bab3-4b508e8a2c68 / ext3 defaults 0 1

So what am I doing wrong?

You might want to start by having some patience wink. This is a forum, not a hot line or a paid help desk with big-time SLA's and million-dollar budgets smile.

Also, please don't bump your topics, we have an Edit button if you need to add info wink.

I think, considering your previous topics, you can't really claim people are ignoring you or avoiding your topics. I distinctively remember your first ones, I know that.

Yes I know usually I do get help and Im grateful for that its just last time and this time I was pretty much Ignored  on what I would think is a common problem. Sorry for being so hasty.

@soupcan Yes I am in both of those groups I have been from the install.

Then I'm sorry. Those who know more than me will have to help you.

Re: Help with dvd mount fstab file?

I deleted the dvd/cd lines in fstab . I let hal controls them .

Try that and install PCmanFM as It's the only FM I use ( so I can compare my setup with yours).

How can I configure hal? If i use a PCmanFM config will it work with nautilus? I don't plan on using PCmanFM but if hal can be configured can I do that?

Re: Help with dvd mount fstab file?

Nezmer what do you mean it should work by default? Hal or fstab? My fstab DOES work but i just have to be root to use the usb through nautilus. My dvd is working fine though.

Why do you want your DVD to mount through fstab ?
If you want everything you insert to be automounted , then fstab is not the way to go . There is automount tools out there but I never used one . btw , to make sure everything in fstab is mounted , You should do *as root* 'mount -a' .

If you want to mount as a normal user , fstab is not the way to go . HAL should control devices and partitions and It gives you the permission to mount them .

Do you see the DVD icon in either nautilus or PCmanFM ?
If yes :
Can you mount the DVD as a normal user buy clicking on the icon ?

Re: Help with dvd mount fstab file?

Nezmer, Yes I can mount my dvd as a normal user and I can see the icon. Sorry my topic title is a little misleading. But I now need help with the usb. Usb automounts for root only and I can see the icon in a root nautilus. But if hal is easier then I would rather do that. I look over the hal wiki but I don't understand it much is there a wiki on configuring hal?

EDIT:Oh I tried deleting my dvd lines in fstab and they dont work without them if thats what you meant by default.

Re: Help with dvd mount fstab file?

Alright .
Out of curiosity , I installed nautilus and looked around .
Yes ,It doesn't work Out-of-the-box  If you're not inside gnome . But the solution is to run :

dbus-launch nautilus

Remove the dvd/usb lines in fstab .

Re: Help with dvd mount fstab file?

I am inside gnome when using nautilus. I tried your suggestion I removed the dvd/usb lines in the fstab and ran

dbus-launch nautilus

Both as root and normal user and now neither the DVD or USB will mount. I used to be able to get usb to mount in nautilus as root and the dvd worked as a normal user. I think I just need some help on the fstab. Ive read the whole wiki and it doesn't really help I tried a bunch of different configurations too.
