Wierd FPS numbers in Gnome

Hey all, I've been running gnome on my t61p thinkpad lately and i noticed some wierd behavior depending on whether or not my laptop is plugged in during gnome startup.

When my laptop is plugged in during gnome startup, my system seems to run slightly slower than usual, and glxgears gives about 250-300 fps.  However, when I have gnome startup with the laptop unplugged, it runs noticeably faster with glxgears giving around 3300 fps.  Additionally, unplugging or plugging in the laptop after gnome has started has no effect on the performance.

Anyway, it's not really a big problem, just curious if anyone had any ideas what might be causing this behavior, as i can't seem to figure it out.  BTW i'm running compiz and using the NVIDIA driver as well. Thanks.
