ftp install wtf?

okay, so i gave up on fixing my network on the old installation and am trying to reinstall.  i selected FTP install so that the installer would try to do some network setup.  i do a modprobe r8169 for my ethernet card, and then tell the installer to use eth0 with dhcp.  it says the network setup is successful, then when i get to the step where i select packages the 'select package categories' screen has the following menu options:

[*]Expected  ^
[*]at            ^
[*]least        ^
[*]7             ^
[*]tokens     ^
[*]for           ^

wtf is happening?
