I have a severe motorboating problem with ALSA

xmms and realplayer both work 100% for MP3 and streaming audio-video.
However the voip apps I try are motorboating. Gnomemeeting just sits there in the config test and burps about once a second.
This happens on 2.6.8-3 2.6.8mm, and 2.6.7-1 kernels, so it is nothing to do with the kernel.

neither dmesg nor /var/log/messages gives any clue
