I'm trying out KDE 4.2 and wanted to see how the famed Amarok works, but I can't find it. I've been searching the repos for amarok but I only find the old one. Amarok 2.0 has been out for some time now. Did I miss anything?

From amaroks official website (amarok.kde.org):
As of 10/12/2008 (Amarok 2.0 release day) there are some PKGBUILDs for Amarok 2 SVN in AUR. A proper Amarok 2.0 package should land in the [extra] repository soon. Also there are unstable Amarok 2 packages in [kdemod-extragear] and [kdemod-playground].
Dependencies (packages available in official repositories): libmtp mysql or mysqle taglib libnjb loudmouth libgpod
Should not be too long until they upgrade to 2.0 in [extra]. Just use 1.4 for now - if you can stand kdelibs3 -, or build from AUR.

OK, thanks for the info. I will wait for the new one.

Or use kdemod

I was thinking of that, but I had problems syncing with the mirror in Norway, so I picked the Arch version.:P

not wanting to be a troll, I tried from aur, and I think amarok 2 is horrific in its 2.0 version, so I'm happy that arch keep the earlier version, and I think we should not rush, is better to wait to the next version, as arch did with kde 4.0.

hm, why not both? amarok2, perhaps in testing, and amarok 1.4 still in extra?

Absolutely not for flame, this is an embarrassing delay ... but I suppose that amarok2 is not welcome at many developpers and manteiners, becouse of the famous mysql modded and embedded. So ... waiting for amarok boys solution. See this 3d:

Nobody should be forced to use monolithic KDE It's practically more the Arch version than the stock KDE, IMHO.
These should be fast even if they're not too close. The first one is only a few miles away from me, so I get insane speed, and they host a lot of other stuff too

Thanks. I just wanted to try it out. I guess I can live without it. I am quite fond of MPD + Sonata. Actually, I am quite fond of Xfce too. It has everything I want, so I don't really know if I would switch to KDE anyway. Just wanted to try it out. You have to know what choices you have got. Maybe I should try KDEmod too.

Good to see the are going to fix the whole mysql issue (http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/11591). So nice of the to do that so it can get included "in the [extra] repository soon".

I finally managed to compile Amarok 2 yesterday, but immediately uninstalled it after a few minutes of use. IMO, the new Amarok is still very buggy and for me, unusable. Importing files freshly by selecting folders led to duplicated artists, each showing all the albums/songs by that artist, and some songs being recognized or tagged wrongly. One of my Muse albums showed up as Daft Punk in artist/album, but retained the original song names (and were, of course, the correct song). The tags were unfixable, Amarok refusing to write them no matter what I tried.
Amarok 1.4 was an amazing piece of software, but 2.0 not so much. Since 1.4 doesn't integrate well with KDE4, I switched to Exaile (GTK clone of Amarok 1.4) for the time being... hopefully by the time Amarok hits the repositories proper it'll work better.

I'm eagarly awaiting Amarok2 to get back on it's feat, though I must admit Juk doesn't seem to suck much anymore at all. I'm finding it quite useable to hold me over!

I don't understand why many of you are migrating away from Amarok 1.4, saying that 2.0 is not ready. What does that have to do with v. 1.4? However, I do agree that Amarok 2 shouldn't have been marked as a final release yet. Give it some more time to mature and I'm sure it will turn out just fine.
For my part, I love Amarok 1.4 and I'll continue using it for the time being.

Amarok2 doesn't isn't quite as fullfeatured as amarok 1.4 was, but I find it very usable nonetheless and still the 2nd bestplayer out there (behind 1,4). Good enough for me to use anyway. I think the new direction for it also looks very exciting. The interface has certainly received a lift. Very elegant.
Exaile is too buggy for me to use. Doesn't handle track numbers very well and not at all when loading multiple albums into the playlist.

Amarok 1.4 looks bad in my environment. I use a dark grey color scheme, and no matter what I do parts of 1.4 stay light and stand out far too much for my liking.

@ JooBlixlarz: What environment are you speaking of? QT4 / KDE4? Just curios.

Before we can even think about an amarok2 package the fakeroot problem and mysql issue has to be fixed. (and no, building as root and linking staticially to mysql is not an ideal solution).
Is this mysql bug even reported to amarok?

So are there any news on Amarok2? Will it replace the 1.4 version soon? Haven't found any news about it for quite some time. Does anyone know anything about it? Thanks!
Offline
I don't know about its status, but tpowa seems to be working on a PKGBUILD for 2.0.2.

Haven't found much about how the process is going to officially upgrade to version 2.0.
Does anyone have any information about it?
Maybe Tpowa can let us know how the current state is?
Thanks a lot!

For some reason, the latest version of Amarok seems to have an issue with the collection treeview (i.e. if I expand the "Local Collection" node, nothing appears). The only way to fix this issue (for me) was to use an SVN build, which hasn't deleted my music collection yet (*knocks on wood*).
Regardless of how whether I like Amarok 2.0 or not (it's not bad when you use Bespin and remove the center column), my opinion is that it's like KDE 4.0---technically stable, but not really usable.
Maybe in a few releases, they'll restore all of the features that 1.4 had. And hopefully they'll fix their darn script API...
