external usb2 partition missing after ntfs-3g upgrade [SOLVED]

EDIT solved using 'testdisk'

I have just upgraded to the latest ntfs-3g 2009.1.1-1 and didn't reboot after so leaving a torrent open and running overnight.
Next morning I noticed despite the download still running (to /dev/null? who knows) i could not browse the disk under its mounted directory /media/750/ (it's a 750 gig so simple label)

Few facts..
It is a external harddisk oem sata disk with seperate usb2 enclosure.
It has been running fine for over a year.
In windows it does not automount like a usb stick can't even see it under disk management under admin tools.
The device tree no londer show the partition /dev/sdc1 just the block device /dev/sdc.

I hopefully presume the partition table is the only thing that is damaged and the data is safe for a ddrescue but i cannot think or find any tools to sava/copy/restore the data. Or to fix the table for a remount.

Please anyone have any ideas? a list of tools if anything would be great just to get me started.

/etc/fstab

/dev/sdc1 /media/750 ntfs-3g users,uid=1000,gid=100,fmask=0113,dmask=0002,noatime,noauto 0 0
