Very irritating repeating search at start-up by akonadi program.

Don't really need the program.

Some depends in kde.

Can I delete akonadi?

The problem persists and reports problems with akonadi files in kde4.

Re-install of kde4 does not eliminate the akonadi search display at boot-up. The display occurs three times and prevents access to programs via mouse. It is slow to perform the searches as well.

What does akonadi do when it works correctly?

You gotta go to System Settings -> Advanced -> KDE Resources and change things to not use Akonadi.

Akonadi is supposed to store all your PIM data in an unified manner.

Tried the suggested procedure.

When accessing the kde resources arena, the akonadi search repeats for three times automatically. The only activity possible in the kde resources window is "add". Don't know what to "add".

Selection of akonadi configuration gives a large window with a redX and a statement that akonadi is not operational.

Therefore I cannot remove akonadi.

I have tried pacman to correct the akonadi files which are reported by the search to no avail(they are kde files).

I am in x86-64 with the latest kde4.2 and have tried re-installs to no avail.

You can troubleshoot akonadi by going to "System Settings > Advanced > Akonadi > Akonadi Server Configuration" and clicking on "test."

try also to delete or move ~/.config/Akonadi, this helped me to get rid of his errors

I receive the same response with akonadi search but no definitive corrective action is described.

I hesitate to just try anything that comes along because of the complexity of kde4. Troubleshooting info is not easy to come by what with it being a new release with little operating experience.

I would dearly like to remove it for now.

Attempts prior to this post gave dependencies in kde which would be affected. Not a good prospect for okanadi removal.

I can attempt to delete the ~/.config/Akonadi assuming it will stop the akonadi search action which is irritating.

Tried file search for akonadi and clicked on "config" listing.

Found 'akonadiservrrc', clicked on it and set "start server=false".

Rebooted and the akonadi server started its three runs again at Desktop...holding up all activity.

Using pacman -R akonadi gives "kdepimlibs requires akonadi".

Can I remove akonadi anyhow?

I understand that you don't want akonadi to nag you at every boot, but it is not a "program," but a kind of layer between apps and data and thus an integral part of kdepim. AFAIK, it has backends for different ways to store PIM data, allowing the use of standard contact data files, email files, etc., but also sql based storage. Maybe you can somehow get around using it for now, but I am not quite sure why you would want to do that. I think getting it to work properly is probably better.

What are the errors and warnings that it throws?

I do not understand why the elements needed by akonadai were not installed by kde4( re-installed kde4 as well). I have no clue as to where to go to find kde4 internals.

First of all, I need to correct what I said before. During the rc period, I migrated some data to akonadi and it seemed to work well for me. However, some functionality has been disabled for the release since it was not approved quality-wise, most notably using most of the native akonadi resources. Also, most apps cannot use the akonadi API yet, so akonadi simply emulates the old API while using the standard resources anyway. Thus, if I understand correctly, there is no point in using it right now. Disabling might be a good idea.

About your log: it is weird that it complains about missing resource agents and then lists them. I have no idea why that could be. Even if I disable the server and remove all resources, I do not get this output.

As a side note: I am wondering why the mysql.socket is located in root's home? Are you running X as root? If not (which I hope), you should probably change it to you user's home dir. Also, when running akonadi I would suggest using the internal akonadi server.

Any way, to disable akonadi try this:

- Edit ~/.kde4/share/config/kres-migratorrc and add "Enabled=false" under [Migration]
- Get rid of all akonadi resources in "System Settings > Advanced > KDE Recources" (which you did, IIRC)
- Double check in KAddressbook, KCalendar, Kmail, etc. that you don't use any akonadi resources, but the legacy files.
- Get rid of all akonadi resources in "System Settings > Advanced > Akonadi > Akonadi Resources Configuration"

Has migration been removed from 4.2? I don't think so. (Just checked: no.) Maybe the file is created once the migration starts? You could try to do

kwriteconfig --file kres-migratorrc --group Migration --key Enabled --type bool false

Even if it doesn't do anything, it shouldn't harm (unless you want to migrate.) And it rules out that akonadi is run to migrate your data.

In the Akonadi Server Configuration, start akonadi, then go to the Akonadi Resources Configuration, remove all resources, and finally go back to the previous tab and stop akonadi.

As I said before, you somehow run the database from the root home folder. This cannot work if you run KDE as a normal user.

As far as I know from browsing the bbs, lilsirecho runs his box(en) as root, because he "never had any problems that way".

My use of root is not necessarily bad practice. I have five years of root.

A more serious practice is to restrict its use in a downloaded pacman package without creating an option for root.

Many problems in linux can only be solved in root.

This difficulty may not be solvable in root since it is kde4 and an integral element not removable AFAICT.

There may be a way to enable root but most packages have to be modified in PKGBUILD format.

Kde may frown on such a thing.

I guess Linus Torvalds has it right about kde4.

Root is supposed to be superuser...not out of bounds>>>>
