I'm having problems in 4.2 with getting rid of icons on the desktop and the taskbar. These are both from my previous 4.1 installation and also some I have deleted from 4.2 itself.
The desktop icons are/were links to applications created in the desktop folder and then dragged across onto the desktop itself. If I delete these, then next time I log on they appear as "type unknown" icons (white background with some binary numbers). I can get rid of these by deleting some config files in .kde4/share/config as detailed in post http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=64166. This also removes other changes I've made to the desktop such as wallpaper. Anybody got an alternative way of sorting this?
The taskbar redundant icons are a little more persistent, and I haven't found a way yet of removing these permanently. Any offers please?
Edit: KDEmod 4.2

Surely someone on here can point me in the direction of the appropriate config file to delete?? It's driving me nuts having to delete the redundant icons in the taskbar each time I boot up. Pretty please:)

What happens if you remove the icons and then run
kquitapp plasma && plasma
?

It brings them back again! Still there when I log off and on again.

Some people have reported this at bugs.kde.org: http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=183635.
This are probably special cases as there were only two or three reports + yours
I'm not really sure how to help in this case. Sorry.

Sorry, I should have marked this as solved. There were a number people on the kdemod forum with similar problems. Some solved it with the solutions posted above & others by installing kde 4.2 vanilla. I sorted it finally by a combination of removing the config files and restarting plasma.
