try pacman -S gnome as in the wiki I updated my sons after 3months with no problem I think your problem is softlinking in the past and that is now coming back to haunt you
agreed, people should start learning valuable lessons from some of these threads.
1.) never softlink a library just to get functionality - recompile you lazy bastards.
2.) running pacman -Syu more then once every 6 months is most effective.

i'm just wondering if your compiz is setup properly? could be the reason for awn not working right. just a thought.
