This started happening after resizing my partition with gparted CD. It may also have been caused by recent updates.
The error box pops up against a black background while gnome is loading.
The error and the steps I took to try to fix it are here.
however, it still persists.

Raccoon1400,
all there is about it is that the file $HOME/.dmrc needs to be owned by user and have 644 permissions.
Supposing the owner is duncan, just do in a terminal:
chown duncan $HOME/.dmrc
chmod 644 $HOME/.dmrc
use 'sudo' if needed.
This is because of security reasons, so as that nobody can fiddle with yhis file.

Mektub, I did all that already with no luck.
I finally solved it. I deleted the file and it's backup and they were regenerated. I had deleted the file before, but this time I deleted the backup too.
