ghostscript and greek

hello all!

I have a question that has been troubling me for days! The general idea started becase I have to write a paper and deliver it in pdf or ps format. The language must be greek! So I downloaded lyx and after a lot of trying I managed to write in greek. But when I export in pdf ar ps format from lyx and I open with acroread or ghostscript all I get is stupid symbols. The weird thing is that I downloaded a pdf file from a friend of mine written in greek and I am able to view it with acroread normally. My guess is that there is something going on with fonts. I've read many things but it seems that I cannot solve this problem on my own.
Can you plz help me out here because I am running out of time

You have to embed the fonts into the ps/pdf. What ever you are using to create this document should have an option to do this when you print to file. I guess when you do the dvips.

edit: found this...

hey if you 're in a hurry and If I'm not missing something big here, either I can produce your pdf and send it to you, or you can just grab latest OpenOffice open it, and export it as PDF. In my box (greek latest OpenOffice) it just works

I think the problem is that the document is in latex and the default dvi setting is not to embed anything but the basic truetype fonts.

Hey, a thousand thanx! I finally, was able to deliver my paper in pdf through the oo! But unfortunatelly now I really need to know how to produce pdf/ps from lyx because I am a really stupid linux user who needs to know how to do the thing that really pissed me off for many days.... anyway thanx a lot

I have never used LyX, so I am not sure about it. What can be done is to convert the latex on the command line. You start out with your file.tex file and convert to device independent file. You do this twice to get the numbering correct, as the first time it doesn't know where all the references are. This creates the file.dvi, which you then change to postscript via dvips. You can also change to pdf via dvipdf.

latex file.tex
latex file.tex
dvips file.dvi -o file.ps -t letter
gv file.ps

In the arch case, the path was different than what I said (sorry, I didn't look). It is in /usr/share/texmf/fonts/...

You probably don't have the ams fonts installed so the rest of the path is wrong, it is only for that specific font, but you can either look to see if the greek font you want is there (there must be greek, as the letters are all available as symbols), or make a dir and put your desired font there and then add it to the .dvipsrc file. I haven't tested this, so who knows.

So I checked and I found that in lyx I am using the font GRTex. Afterwords I searched my pc and I was not able to locate that fond. I looked in all the /usr folder and nothing was there. This seems very strange (to start with...)

Furthermore, I tried to execute the code you said, namely

gv file.ps

but the resullt was the same

So as you see I am really disappointed with myself! Nothing works...
Anythink else that you could tell me yould really help me here because I am kond of desperate

Maybe I am out to lunch. I always thought LyX created standard latex files and that it needs latex (tetex package) to run. I looked at the Lyx page and it only needs

gcc
xfree86
xforms
libjpeg

I have been leading you astray I am afraid. Sorry.

If you do have the .tex files, you can use the commands in my last post if you add the tetex package. It is big, so don't do it unless you need to.

Just in case you havent seen enough of your system, a lot of the lyx stuff is in /usr/share/lyx

Hi again!

Finally I've done my paper so I am back to solve my lyx problem! What I did is that I used the oo and then printed in a pdf file. everything worked there fine. I can write in greek and then produce a readable in greek pdf/ps file. If it can be done in my system by oo then for sure it can be done by lyx as whell. The thing is how? I'vew tried everything, looked everywhere, no solution to my problem! Do you have any more ideas of what might be wrong? I would really appreciate any help!

I checked out the things you said and althouth I made some forword steps I still can't solve my original problem. Zeppelin mentioned the following site:

I downloaded and installed it and it seems terrific. I played around with it for a while and I really think that it was a tool that will welp me a lot. I didn't manage to produce a greek readable pdf/ps file yet but I just downloaded it this morning. I think that I will because it seems like an easy to use frontend. But the thing is not just to produce the pdf/ps file from the kile. I have already done this from open office. The thing is to make lyx do it. Why? Well... I don't know... it seems that I am stuck with lyx for no reason. Anyway, the good thing is that now I have another tool to play with and trouble people with questions...

the mess is that tonos ' is in apostrophe. and that's not bad, but when writing in normal greek we're used to write it in ;. so I cannot stand this. and either I should fix it
or I should write in NATIVE greek [not greeklish]

So I assume that the iso-8859-7 althouth was there it was not loaded! Any suggestions?

I don't know about texmacs but I know how to make emacs write in greek (and then you load the tex module)

I am stuck with kile (not that I don't like it) but the original plan was for lyx and I feal that I am lossing focus! Anyway, If you have any more suggestions aboyut the encoding I am open...

Finally I managed to use kile and produce a greek readable ps by the following tex

iMo Lyx(-qt) and Texmacs don't support Greek..
dont lose your time.

in the problem you said a texhash being root would have helped I think.

utf8 is not the solution? I think again..

to enable hyphenation UNCOMMENT the greek in /usr/share/texmf/tex/generic/config/language.dat

Unfortunatelly I don't know bout texmacs. I just said that I know about emacs and how to write greek. It was just a suggestion notrhing more!

Back to the lyx problem. I run as root "texhash" and the problem, was not solved. During compile I get no errors but the produced dvi is not readable. It contains only a few capital greek letters repeating themselfs. So the result is similar to my previous results.

As far as hyphenation I already had uncommented it as you said in your previous post. Probably it did not work because I hadn't run the texhash.

The solution I found was the utf8. It works fine. What I said was that all these are done by kile, while the original problem started from lyx. I started liking kile and to tell you the truth I like it a lot. It's just that I realy want to be able to do it on lyx because I am stupid enought to stick with my original plan.

Anyway, I'll wait for more suggestions!
