What are you trying to tell us?
? that it's worthless spending my time writing anything about this, but a simple ctrl-v gets the point across.
This is frustrating. I converted to linux to learn about *linux*. Started with gentoo and found I was spending all my time learning about portage. Now, before I get started on any projects I'm interested in, I've gotta go figure out pacman, PKGBUILD's, etc, blah blah. Why make a package depend on openjdk6? I mean, if they both really do provide the same functionality, then why lock users in ?
I may want to learn java - if I do, I'll be using netbeans. Doesn't it make sense to use Sun's jdk with Sun's IDE? I mean, if there's gonna be an issue between openjkd6 and jdk, then it'd probably show up in Sun's IDE, right? AFAIK, netbeans doesn't require jre / jdk specifically, but isn't it possible that there might be problems with that scenario? (where do I look on my system to see dependencies?)
And then, I use TOS (thinkorswim), a stock and options java trading platform. I only paper trade at the moment, but using a program that takes real money in an unsupported environment or with a "glitchy" back-end, makes me nervous.
I've read that openoffice creeps with openjdk6, but not with sun's jre
here's another from this morning... all I want is a simple weather applet, I don't wanna lose functionality in other programs that *actually may* need sun's jre just to have a plasma weather widget.

I did that and so far so good.
You also need to change line 18 to:
. /etc/profile.d/jre.sh
Your mileage may vary, since I had already forced the reinstall of jre.

line 18? Where is that. My last post had the *entire* contents of rmy soprano depends file.
Also, after I wrote that, I noticed there are depends files in /var/lib/pacman/sync directory. What I had quoted above was the "local" version in /var/lib/pacman/local. Can you confirm which depends file you changed, was it the one in sync or local directory?
I have also already done 'pacman -Rd openjdk6 && -S jdk' .... (or something similar, that I read in one of these posts about this issue).
Thanks,
Brian

Thanks Mektub... am building soprano now, after changing the dependencies and line 18 in the PKGBUILD with ABS, according to the link you provided. Hopefully this will work out alright.
