No wireless card detected [SOLVED]

I have a broadcom 4312 wirless card (yeah, I know), which I can get working in Fedora and Suse using the broadcom-wl driver.

I want to switch to Arch, but before making the plunge, need to know if my wireless will work. I've installed Arch in a Virtualbox, and using wired internet, tried to get wireless working. I have managed to install the broadcom-wl drivers using AUR, they modprobe fine, and lsmod shows wl, iee80211_crypt to be running fine.

However, still no wireless.

lspci doesnt show any wireless card at all - I think this may be where the problem lies.

Any advice would be much appreciated, if this works then I'm installing Arch straight away!

Thanks all

Jamie

Re: No wireless card detected [SOLVED]

Did you check the wiki: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Broadcom_BCM4312
It is a whole page about that card. I don't use it but I've heard about people getting it up.

Re: No wireless card detected [SOLVED]

Thanks both. Yes I've read the 4312 wiki, which is how I managed to install the broadcom-wl driver.

iwconfig doesn't show any wiress devices at all, only the wired device (which works fine).

Is there something I should have done when installing Arch?

Re: No wireless card detected [SOLVED]

I gues you read this at the bottom of the article:

-Put "ieee80211_crypt_tkip" and "wl" at the BEFORE b44 (if you have it) position in MODULES= in /etc/rc.conf
-Don't forget to blacklist b43
-Your wireless card will be eth0
-Your ethernet card will be eth1
-Both will work fine

So no wireless card will appear, it wil be ethX .

Re: No wireless card detected [SOLVED]

Yeah I read that, was hoping for eth1 to appear. As it is all I have is eth0, which is my wired connection.

As I said, if I run lsmod, I can see wl and ieee80211_crypt running

Re: No wireless card detected [SOLVED]

looks weird to me, perhaps you have the card switched off with a mechanical switch, or the BIOS has turned it off.

Re: No wireless card detected [SOLVED]

No, nothing like that. The card is working on my host box, just not on the virtual one. It could of course be something related to running Arch in a virtual box, but I doubt it. Weird indeed.

Re: No wireless card detected [SOLVED]

Oh, you run it from VirtualBox big_smile over-read that part. I bet you run Virtualbox from a linux distribution? Then you should modprobe vboxnetflt (on the host).

Re: No wireless card detected [SOLVED]

I don't have Virtualbox installed now But I *think* It uses virtual network devices and you can choose the device from settings/configuration .

Do you have the same ethernet card listed in Virtualbox and the real setup ?

--EDIT--
Duologic seems to know better so follow his advice .

Re: No wireless card detected [SOLVED]

Thanks again. Still not working after the modprobe. You're right, I'm running it from a Virtualbox from Fedora. If it seems this is causing the problem, and that its not too much of a problem to get Broadcom 4312 wifi devices to work, then I'll just go ahead and install it properly, and hope for the best!

Re: No wireless card detected [SOLVED]

@Nezmer - yes, I'm already running a windows XP virtual box, and the net settings in Virtualbox settings are the same. I'm starting to think this is a Vbox problem rather than Arch. Thanks for your help.

Re: No wireless card detected [SOLVED]

Maybe you should try it from an Arch live cd so that Vbox doesn't interfere.

Re: No wireless card detected [SOLVED]

Thanks  for all this guys. The install CDs after running lscpi show a Broadcom 4310 (although its actually a 4312).

I suspect that after updating Arch it might detect the card type correctly, but am still concerned about whether it will actually work - I might give it a go anyway, although am now conerned which drivers to try. I'll keep messing around and hope to post back from wireless next time.

Re: No wireless card detected [SOLVED]

[SOLVED]!

Wireless now working - must have been a Vbox problem. I'm now updating and installing a window manager.

The interesting thing was how my Broadcom 4312 card shows up as a Broadcom 4310 card under Arch. Didn't make any difference, and the Broadcom-wl driver works fine with it, so for anyone else with this issue, I recommend broadcom-wl drivers.

Thanks for all your help

Jamie

Congratulations .
You should edit your first post and add [solved] to the title .
