ESound and Music Playback

I've never been able to get ESound working on Arch. Installing from pacman, compiling in abs, even downloading it myself and compiling, no good. I've tried every permutation of compiled or downloaded versions of esd, xmms, audacious, and its plugins. The daemon seems to start, but nothing can use it; xmms, for example, insists that the esd daemon isn't running.

The reason I ask is that this is the one thing stopping me from switching off Gentoo for good. I am hearing impaired and use a visualizer called Extace to help "listen" to music. It only works with ESound; without it I feel like I'm missing a dimension of music. If anyone knows how to get this going please help!

PS: Although Pulseaudio is supposed to be a drop-in replacement for ESound, it doesn't work with Extace. I did try. I'm at my wit's end here.
