Does anyone have a recommendation for a better way to look at mplayer? I'm normally fine with it but this is my media center I'm running it on and I'd like something that maybe could match up with my MythTV OSD...I don't really care if it is the same but you know, a front end that has a nice format. For instance, a progress bar and time elapsed/remaining when you pause, information that can display the embedded title information from the file and/or filename, etc. would be nice.
I'd use the mythtv internal player except it doesn't work with all of my files...

My prefered mplayer front-end is gnome-mplayer.

+1. Besides being a nice, clean player, you can use the gecko-mediaplayer plug-in which is far superior to the mplayer-plugin.

Smplayer here as well, though gnome-mplayer is nice too.
On Windows I use smplayer and KMplayer...
The day Microsoft makes a product that doesn't suck, is the day they make a vacuum cleaner.

But if they tell you that I've lost my mind, maybe it's not gone just a little hard to find...

yeah...smplayer kinda isn't what I'm looking for, at least not from what I got on the trial runs of it I did. I think I'll be using it on my laptop from now on but still would like something else for my mythtv box. Let me further explain, this system runs without a mouse or keyboard unless I'm tinkering, so LIRC only. I'd like something that brings up a nice (skinnable) gui with progress bar when I pause and press info. I can get mplayer (and hence smplayer) to do this with my remote control but it is boring and not skinnable.

what about using xine instead?

guess it couldn't hurt. Does have better dvd menu support. I'll give xine a try.

switched from freevo to xbmc.
i was impressed. everything, i mean _everything_, worked directly out of the box. even the remote with lirc. i had only to remap some buttons just for convenience.
