When I use 'mplayer dvd://' to play a dvd, I get this output.
I checked /media/dvd, and it is empty. I have tried http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/HAL … zed_by_HAL, but it does not solve the problem. I am in the 'optical' group, and libdvdread, libdvdcss and libdvdnav are installed.
The only solution that works to play a dvd is to use 'mount', and to invoke mplayer directly on the VOB file.
What files/logfiles should I check? What commands should I run, to see what's going on? I don't think I did something special on hal, so I'd like to understand...
[edit]
I can also use 'pmount dvd', and it will be mounted to /media/dvd/. But 'mplayer dvd://' still does not work and gives the same output as before. I have to browse to the VOB file to play it.
[edit 2]
Actually, the only vob file I can play seems to be the file where they say 'beware, don't download, downloading is baaaad'.
<unrelated>at least, with dvix, I wouldn't get this kind of issue.</unrelated>
[edit 3]
I modified my xinitrc to launch awesome with dbus, as advised here, http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=55372
dbus-lauch awesome
but it doesn't fix it.

I tried to install libdvdread-ifo and libdvdnav-ifo (advises on #archlinux) but nothing more.

I recompilled libdvdcss and mplayer. I have to say this dvd played fine on the gentoo of one of my friend. The hardware should be fine too (I bought this laptop 4 months ago and burned an archlinux dvd from this drice once I received it, then installed arch, also from this drive. So both reading and writing functions were fine)
I also recompiled libdvdread.

ok, this is definitely a libdvdread issue. vlc and mplayer complain about libdvdread. I really want to see that movie so I tried to rip it, but again, an error from libdvdread.

You don't have to mount a Video-DVD to play it. Mplayer uses its own internal libdvdread, so installing libdvdread-ifo will not make a difference (but it should with vlc). Did you try xine?

Thank you, I did not know that. However I think it's not normal hal does not mount it (is it?).
gxine fails to play my dvd too. It pops up this window :
Read error from:
Error opening vtsN=-1, domain=2.
the output from the terminal is here.
Again, it plays the advertisment, not the movie (and you're right, no need to mount the dvd before).
whereas vlc is stuck in an infinite loop. Even after I (normally) close it I have to kill -9 it : everything slows down on my laptop and the memory starts to fill up.
