Java problems

Just earlier today I had java working (not from konqueror, though). I was trying to get it to work in konqueror (did not change anything much though.) and now, java displays wrong. Here is a pic of what it looks like.

Yes that is a picture. I forgot the extension at first and now I can't get it to reupload. Should open, but if it does not just rename in with .png

I use Archlinux w/ kdemod and openjdk6.
I really need java to get back to looking right, and if I could get it working in konqueror that would be a plus too.

Re: Java problems

You could try removing openjdk and use jdk instead...:)

or

reinstalling openjdk...

Re: Java problems

What are the differences (besides open vs closed source) between openjdk and jdk? I have already tried reinstalling, did not work. I am now installing jdk, we will see how it goes.

Re: Java problems

Well, that solved the display problem. Still does not work  in konqueror. Also, jdk is missing the web start thing. It allowed me to follow links like this http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial … gDemo.jnlp and see the application.
K, I figured out javaws. Forget what I said from Also-application.:D
Now if only konqueror would display web applets.

Re: Java problems

I'm not sure how far you got in the process, and some of your questions didn't get answered.

openjdk6 is the development branch for Sun. The newer the Java/JDK package from Sun, the more open source that it is. JRE 6u12 is the first 64 bit JRE to have both the web plug-in and webstart. The package in community is out of date and has been flagged as so. If you're on 64 bit, and want a JRE that works everywhere, use this package until JRE gets updated:

http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=22264

A long time ago when I still used Konqueror, the way to get applets working was to get Konqueror to point to the 'java' executable that ships with the JRE. Simply putting 'java' in the correct box wasn't enough. In those days it was /opt/java/jre/bin/java. This is still true for the package that I posted above, but I don't know if it's true for the JRE package. I have no idea if this works with KDE 4.x, but it worked great with 3.5.x.

Re: Java problems

Thank you for the reply. I am using JDK from the repo instead of the version you suggested though. It came with javaws, which does the web start thing. I am trying the idea of putting the full path in konqueror now.  << did not work. Any other ideas?

Re: Java problems

Anyone have an idea how to replace openjdk6 with jdk from the community repository? It wont allow because I have applications such as jedit jin which depend on jre. Do I need to uninstall them and install them again?

The maintainer of jre package overslept a bit... roll

Re: Java problems

pacman -Rd openjdk6

Then install jdk or jdk_beta from the AUR as normal.

Re: Java problems

Thanks guys... I looked in the wiki instead of the pacman manual how to bypass dependency checks.

By the way out of curiosity, are the majority of you using openjdk6 or suns jdk?
