autologin from gdm into gnome sometimes fails

hi.
i have enabled autologin for my user in gdmsetup, and it works.
but sometimes it is not

when that fails, X which seems to start then drops me back to the console, and then X and gdm is restarted automatically (i have set gdm in inittab), and this time i end up in the login prompt of gdm. so autologin failed for some reason.

i have looked at /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old and it ends with the line

(II) Initializing extension GLX

it might not be related to GLX because in /var/log/Xorg.0.log
i got after the same line

(II) config/hal: Adding input device Dell Dell USB Keyboard
(II) LoadModule: "evdev"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/input//evdev_drv.so
(II) Module evdev: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
compiled for 1.5.3, module version = 2.1.0
Module class: X.Org XInput Driver
ABI class: X.Org XInput driver, version 2.1

so i begin to think this mess is because of hal. which is normally already initialised... by the time gdm is launched
