[resolved] OpenOffice.org 3 missing StarOffice 3/4/5 format?

I just tried to open some *very* old StarOffice documents (from 1999 or 2000; they're either StarOffice 4 or 5.2), and found that the current OpenOffice doesn't recognize the format anymore.

I searched the OOo forums and found that it is supposed to support them, and sure enough the Windows version on my laptop does.

It's possible there's something wrong with my particular install (a side effect of my hackery to avoid KDE4, which I hate) -- can someone see if they are still able to save in StarOffice 5 format? It should produce a .sdw file.

I guess these formats are covered by "binfilter", search for it. we removed it a long time ago as it's of low usage and nobody requested it anymore and at one point it was a build breaker (that should be fix meanwhile). you can rebuild the package and add the corresponding --with-binfilter configure switch.

It's not worth a recompile for me -- I'll just convert these files on the windows version. The only reason I wanted to open them was to update them to a newer format (doing a refresh of my long-term archives...).

In case anyone else needs to open .sdw files and doesn't have access to a windows box: Google Docs can open them if you change the extension to .sxw .

it's a pity there is a better support for .doc (word 95) or lotus 123, than for staroffice which I used much in the 2000's and which was the alternative format of those time.

unoconv should do the job, but I didn't manage to use it.
