I installed Arch64 today, everything works fine except for X. I can start X and it works, but if I try to start x after I've logged out of Gnome with out a full reboot I get the error:
Exec failed for command "/tmp/firegl1.isse.b4f14860.499a3671.00c9091" (No such file or directory)
and the system hangs. The error does not occur if I run the xf86-video-ati driver, but the FOSS driver does not support hardware acceleration on my card (HD 4850). I've found other threads on this but have not found an answer. Any ideas on how to fix this? Here is my xorg.conf file:

This seems to be a known issue with fglrx, unfortunately...
My only advice is to try older Catalyst versions, try adding
Section "ServerFlags"
Option "AIGLX" "off"
EndSection
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Disable"
EndSection
to your xorg.conf, one user said it helped, and root for / donate to the xf86-video-ati and now the xf86-video-radeonhd dev teams.

Those changes sort of helped; No error messages are displayed but the box still hangs. How do I go about installing older Catalyst versions with pacman?

If you just installed then there is no way to get the package unless you build it yourself. Otherwise if you had been using arch for a while you could downgrade to the older package that would be cached locally.
You said you just installed, so you will not have a cache or any old packages to downgrade too.
Maybe someone will be nice and offer up the package for you to d/l.

Thanks for the help. I think I'll just go back to 32 bit Arch until a new, working driver is released or until I upgrade and get an Nvidia card.

To anyone with the same problem: the issue persists with Catalyst 9.1 on Arch i686. Solution: Use xf86-video-ati if you don't need 3d acceleration or use Catalyst and remember to reboot if you need to restart X.
