Problems with browsers and 'w' key since updates

Hi

I ran 'pacman -Syu' a little over a week ago, and since then I've been experiencing two rather odd problems.

1.
Using any web-browser (firefox, epiphany, songbird, etc), visiting pages that make use of javascript (i -think- that's the cause) makes the browser stop responding for 10-20 seconds. It goes grey and everything. And then eventually it starts working again. This occurs on many websites such as Facebook, Woot.com, to name a few big ones. It's really starting to drive me nuts.

2.
This problem's much weirder. After starting my computer, the w key is very unresponsive. By that I mean for a 'w' keystroke to register I need to hold down the 'w' key for 1 or 2 seconds, after which it will finally work. At first I thought this was a problem with my keyboard, but as the computer remains on, the problem slowly disappears - after about 30 minutes, the 'w' key works as expected. I don't think this is an X/GNOME problem, as I experience the same problems in the TTYs.

I have a Sony Vaio FE-890:
oliver@helios:~$ uname -a
Linux helios 2.6.28-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Feb 13 11:03:55 CET 2009 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T7600 @ 2.33GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

I've been updating frequently in the interim hoping the problems will go away, but so far no luck. Any thoughts?

Re: Problems with browsers and 'w' key since updates

1.) Try a text browser like elinks (it supports JavaScript) inside and outside X. Also, try Opera. Just want to make sure it's with everything. Also, disable Flash and Java to make sure they aren't the problems, and JavaScript too (in Firefox).
2.) Try the keyboard in another PC, if it's USB try another port, try another keyboard in your PC, etc. Make sure it's not hardware smile
3.) Post your pacman log so we can see what updated that fateful sync smile

Re: Problems with browsers and 'w' key since updates

+1 for checking the hardware on the keyboard issue. I had one that simply stopped working occasionally. I was convinced it was software (because obviously if even the magic SysReq key isn't working it must be a catastrophic kernel crash roll)... until I tried another one.

And the Vaio FE-890's a laptop, right? So there's heat. Problems that start/disappear after a few minutes are often related to heat. (Not caused by, necessarily, but those sudden magical fixes/annoying delayed onsets tend to be heat related.)

Listen to me; I sound like a hardware repair guy. It's just 25 years or so of tinkering experience, honestly. smile

Hi

Thanks for your suggestions.

Also, flash doesn't work on webpages anymore. I'm assuming this is some problem with the nspluginwrapper thing...

Re: Problems with browsers and 'w' key since updates

Quick Update:

The browser problem seems to have fixed itself... don't know why, don't know how, and I kinda wish I did but I guess maybe something in the last batch of updates did it. *shrugs*

The 'w' key still has the same issues, but I'm going to get an USB keyboard and see if the issue persists. Also to try is to have the laptop on a while, then reboot and check quickly (to see if it's a heat issue)

Flash still isn't working, but I suspect it has something to do with npviewer being updated (i'm on 64 bit) so I suppose I'll try removing it entirely and reinstalling it (flash, that is), then doing the npviewer thing again.

I'll let you know how things turn out, thanks again for your help!

Re: Problems with browsers and 'w' key since updates

nspluginwrapper shouldn't be needed anymore; we have 64-bit Flash smile
Uninstall it and anything Flash-related and install flashplugin.

Ranguvar:
Thanks! I just got that done, and realized we have 64-bit java too, so java applets are working again too :-)
Now all that's left is that damn 'w' key weirdness... I'll get back to you guys on how that works out in case you're curious
