Arch 32 or 64? What is the real difference?

I am asking this because despite running a AMD64, I recently I had to install a 32 version in order to have this working :
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=65527

Also with the 32 version I got my webcam working with skype! I don't have problems with lib32-libxcb and lib32-libx11 like with Arch64. (I still need to add  'export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so' to .xinitrc, but that is painless)
Because of this, I am seriously thinking about just use Arch32 instead.

Now, I am not asking what should I do. I'm just wondering what do I miss if I use Arch32 instead of Arch 64? It will be computer performance? I mean, a real noticeable performance?

Cheers!

Not much if you have 4GB of ram or less. It also depends on what you use your computer for. Skype is the only thing that I run that is not 64 bit and I just run a chroot for it. I had the chroot because I use to run firefox with flash and java, but this is not a problem anymore.

Some games need the 32bit-chroot-env, too, but then work without problems. wink
Maybe you take a look at this wiki page, too => http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Arc … bit_system

If you run any commercial applications ("free" or otherwise), you could have problems. If you don't, then there shouldn't be any big problems. For example, I have Opera, GoogleEarth, Matlab, and Bibble installed. They all work, but sometimes you need to work a bit harder to get the 64-bit version going.

Re: Arch 32 or 64? What is the real difference?

ok look if you have a 2gb ram and a processor that doesn't support 64bit then go 32 bit, I think the max ram atleast in windows for a 32bit system is 2.5ram.

The question you should ask your self is this:
1. Do I want to make the most of my hardware or restrict it making it inferior to what it could be?

Also your using archlinux a FREE OS. When you came and said "I think I will try to install Arch today" you knew that you would have to configure everything known to man. Linux is a puzzle and that is what makes it wonderful. When you work on a puzzle you can't say something is wrong with it just because it gets hard at times. There is always a way to make it in the end. The good thing about this puzzle is that we have a nice little cheat section calle the wiki. If you follow the Chroot wiki you really shouldn't have many problems.

Re: Arch 32 or 64? What is the real difference?

I never learn. All the answers are in the Wiki :-P

The main two reassons to go for the 32 bits were:
- Using the webcam with skype: but I solved it last night  (Oh yes!)
- Umap not working with flash 64: but this seems to be a flash bug rather than Arch.

I had a quick look to the Chroot tutorial and seems a little bit complicated to me. But in a couple of months I will give it a try as now I have a partition with Arch 32 which I won't use very much.

Thanks for all your answers!
